The List of Wonders

New7Wonders of the World was a campaign started in 2000 to choose Wonders of the World from a selection of 200 existing monuments. The winners were announced on 7 July 2007 in Lisbon, by the New7Wonders Foundation based in Zurich, Switzerland who organized it all.

  • 1200 BC

    Petra Built

    Jordan’s city of Petra served as the capital city of the Nabataean Kingdom until 106 AD when it was annexed by Rome. The Nabataeans were nomadic Arabs who invested in Petra's proximity to the trade routes by establishing it as a major regional trading hub, which is what helped them gain so much wealth.

    Great Wall of China Built

    Measuring about 21,196 kilometers long, the Great Wall of China is no doubt the longest man made project on the earth. It is widely believed that it can be seen from the space. Many astronauts have verified this saying and taken photos as evidence.

  • 80 AD

    Colosseum Completed

    Rome’s Colosseum was built between 72 A.D and 80 A.D under the Emperor Vespasian, and is an enormous amphitheater made from stone and concrete that was used for violent public spectacles, right in the heart of Ancient Rome. This impressive building had 80 entrances and could seat roughly 50,000 spectators at sporting events and games. It is the largest amphitheater in the world!

    Chichen Itza Built

    The stepped pyramids, temples, columned arcades, and other stone structures of Chichén Itzá were sacred to the Maya and a sophisticated urban center of their empire from A.D. 750 to 1200. Viewed as a whole, the incredible complex reveals much about the Maya and Toltec vision of the universe.

    Machu Picchu Built

    This Inca site is perched atop a ridge between the Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu mountains in Peru. It was discovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham III, who was searching for Vilcabamba. Many archaeologists believe it was a royal estate that the emperor and his family would retreat to.

    Taj Mahal Completed

    The Taj Mahal is widely considered one of the most beautiful buildings ever created. The exquisite marble structure in Agra, India, is a mausoleum, an enduring monument to the love of a husband(Shah Jahan) for his favourite wife(Mumtaj Mahal).

    Christ the Redeemer Opened

    Christ the Redeemer is a colossal statue of Jesus Christ which is located at the summit of Mount Corcovado, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It took 5 years to build, and was completed in 1931. The statue stands 30 metres tall without including the 8-meter pedestal, and has arms which span 28 metres wide. It is a beautiful statue made of soapstone and is the largest Art Deco-style sculpture in the world.
